Overview

There are areas in the UK where we have customers on BTs old 20CN service who can migrate to TalkTalk Wholesale and upgrade to ADSL2+.

FAQ For Customers Migrating to Talk Talk

Why Move from BT's 20CN Service to TalkTalk Wholesale?

From June 2013 we are moving customers who are currently on BT's 20CN ADSL service to TalkTalk Wholesale's ADSL2+ service. The benefit of TalkTAlk Wholesale over BT's 20CN service are:

  • More usage for the same money - Units on TalkTalk Wholesale give you twice the usage at peak times when compared with 20CN
  • In most cases customers will get higher download speeds on ADSL2+ compared with ADSL.
  • Option of having Annex M for greater upload speeds.
  • More line options - We have manual control of the line profile settings.
  • TalkTalk Wholesale uses ADSL2+ (up to 24Mbs/s) where BT 20CN uses ADSL1 (up to 8Mb/s)
  • The upgrade is free

How is the AAISP TalkTalk Wholesale service different to TalkTalk Retail?

It's very different! Just as BT Retail's DSL service is quite different to our BT Wholesale service!. We have multiple interconnects direct in to TalkTalk's Wholesale network, and your PPP connection terminates directly on our equipment in the same way as our BE Wholesale and BT Wholesale service does.

Why are lines being migrated automatically?

Only BT Wholesale 20CN lines are being moved to TalkTalk Wholesale where available. Other customers can request to move to TalkTalk Wholesale, please contact Sales.

We make many changes on our network to improve its operation, and this is one of them. We have carefully tested connections on TalkTalk and compared them to BT Wholesale lines and they perform as well if not better. There are many advantages in using TalkTalk Wholesale over BT Wholesale's 20CN Network. Customers have been given the option to not move.

Can I change back if it breaks?

We don't expect any problems with migrating customers to TalkTalk Wholesale, but as usual we will treat this on a case by case basis. Do contact us.

If your exchange gets upgraded to BTs 21CN or FTTC in the future, then you are welcome to move services again.

Rate Limiting & Filtering

We hear stories about TalkTalk retail performing rate limiting and filtering on their service, however this is not the case with our TalkTalk Wholesale service. We don't filter ports or web pages with our other services, the TalkTalk Wholesale service is the same. We have multiple links to TalkTalk and as always our aim is not to be the bottleneck. As with our other services, if there is congestion deep within the wholesale networks of our suppliers, then we will pursue that with them to get it resolved.

I have the 'Premium' Option, what happens on TT?

Updated 2013-06-26. Customers with Premium on 20CN will have that option removed. This is mainly due to the upload on ADSL2+ being up to 1M anyway. Customers can have Annex M enabled for faster upload speeds when on TalkTalk Wholesale for additional costs. The actual speed will vary depending on the line quality and length, but can be up to 2.5Mb/s. Non Annex M will be around 1Mb/s (Annex A).

Will my IP addresses change

No, your IP addresses, IPv6 and any additional IP blocks will all remain.

Will I need to make changes on my router?

No. - the login and other settings are the same between BT 20Cn and TalkTalk Wholesale. As long as your router supports ADSL2+ the it should work without any problem. We can supply a new router if you like though.

How long will the upgrade take?

Once a migration order has been submitted it is usually 5 working days until the line will actually be migrated.

Customers that have been contacted on Wednesday 19th June 2013 regarding the migration will have their service moved on Wednesday 26th June.

It should take under 10 minutes. The actual upgrade will involve an Engineer in the Exchange physically moving wires in the exchange. We don't expect it to take more than 30 minutes though, if you're not back online after an hour then please do give us a call.

Will this affect my PSTN line?

No, your PSTN line, whether it is with us, BT or someone else, will remain unchanged.

How can I improve resilience?

We offer 3G fallback, where by you have a SIM, and possibly a dongle and other hardware from us, then the 3G SIM will be used for fallback. Contact Sales for more information. We can also provide multiple lines, and these can be a mix of TalkTalk Wholesale and BT Wholesale for greater separation.

Can I bond multiple TalkTalk Wholesale lines?

Yes, Lines with us whether TT, BT or BE can be bonded together. We have customers doing this.

Will My ADSL1 Router work?

Yes, the TalkTalk Wholesale lines do support ADSL1 (GDMT modulation). We do recommend using ADSL2+ where possible though. Staff may need to change the line profile manually though, so if you don't get sync then please contact us.

My router only does PPPoE

PPPoE (as opposed to PPPoA) will work, however support for it on the network is unofficial so we would suggest using PPPoA.

Samknows says my Exchange doesn't have TalkTalk, but AAISP says it does

We have seen occasions where Samknows[1] does not list TalkTalk as being enabled on an exchange, but our line checker says it is available.

In these cases, it is quite possible that Samknows is out of date.

My Line is Slower than it used to be

Most lines when moved to TalkTalk Wholesale should sync at a similar speed. However, in some cases the speed has been lower. This is not always a fault and we are able to change the line profile to increase the speed.

In most cases we see TalkTalk Wholesale lines having the same or greater sync speeds than when on BT 20CN.

Please do email support@ if you would like us to change your line profile.

We will have profile-change buttons on the control pages shortly.
