This page is to help customers diagnose a slow speed problem on their line.

Please see our broadband speed code of practice

Tests to run

Look at the CQM Graphs

The CQM Graphs can show visually the quality of your line and can help diagnose problems. the CQM Graphs page on the wiki has examples and help.

Ping

Run some pings to our PPP endpoint - 81.187.81.187, run at least 100, and either look for loss in the final statistics, eg:

ping -c 100 81.187.81.187
PING81.187.81.187 (81.187.81.187) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from 81.187.81.187: icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=11.0 ms
...
64 bytes from 81.187.81.187: icmp_seq=100 ttl=49 time=11.6 ms
--- 81.187.81.187 ping statistics ---
100 packets transmitted, 100 received, 0% packet loss, time 99160ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 10.433/10.951/14.150/0.411 ms

This shows 100 pings sent with no loss, and an average time of 10.951 milliseconds - this is a good line.

Speed Testers

  • TalkTalk Wholesale:- For TalkTalk Wholesale Customers, please run the speed tester at internet-speedtest.net (and submit your line number once complete). Please run this test at least 3 times, and preferably during various times of the day/evening Please enter your line number without any spaces! These results will then be available to AAISP staff as well as TalkTalk Wholesale staff.

Please also use our speedtester speedtest2.aa.net.uk and let us know the results.

Please do run the various speed testers at different times of day, as this can help determine if there is congestion at peak times.

-Bear in mind that online speed testers are not always 100% accurate, and should be used with a bit of caution. Also, run the speed tested on a wired connection rather than wifi, and without any other traffic happening on the line.

Traffic Capture

If your service is slow due to huge amounts of other traffic then do a Traffic Dump from the control pages to see what the traffic is.
