What would AAISP recommend as a router/Modem?

AAISP customers are free to use their own routers if they wish. This is a table of the routers/modems that AAISP sell, and their features:

ZyXEL VMG1312-T20B Technicolor DGA0122 FireBrick 2900

Specs 4 port, wifi, FTTC, ADSL, Bridge modem PPPoE Bridge Modem, ADSL 4 (5) port Ethernet Router/Firewall etc.
Summary

(T20B for short!) A consumer grade router which ideal for home use or for small offices.

(T'Color for short!) Our higher specification standard router. If you want better range, you can use 2.4 GHz. If you need higher performance or speed, you can use the 5GHz band. The 5GHz band, has the potential to cut through network clutter and interference to maximize network performance.

(FB for short!) The FireBrick 2900 is a router, bonding box and traffic shaper. It can act as a SIP PBX, VPN tunnel endpoint and concentrator. Most commonly it is used as a general purpose network appliance in office environments, or for customers that would like to bond 2 or more circuits.

Ideal for:
  • Home use
  • Small office
  • All-in-one unit
  • Use with a your own PPPoE router/firewall
  • Can do full 1500 byte MTU over PPPoE, which the ZyXEL can't in bridge mode
  • Flexible and feature-packed router
  • Advanced features such as 3G fallback, bonding etc.
Not so good points for:
  • FTTP
  • G.FAST
  • Plugging in to a Modem (there is no Ethernet WAN port)
  • WiFi is 2.4 GHz only

Steeper learning curve, as you'd probably expect from a router of this level (but A&A can help support)

Configured by AAISP

Sometimes an extra charge is applied

ADSL/ADSL2+

Will require a Modem, such as the DLINK

FTTC
Ethernet Service
Use with your own PPPoE router

(Bridge mode)

We prefer the DLINK as a bridge due to MTU limitations (they drop packets above 1504 bytes)

Built in WiFi
Native IPv6 n/a (as used as a bridge)
Built in FireWall

Typical Scenarios

Or, maybe these typical scenarios will help you decide:

Your Scenario Our Suggestion
I'm a home user, wanting wifi and wired connections for ADSL or FTTC, or just needing a VSDL modem for my own PPPoE router:   ZyXEL VMG 1312
I have my own routerboard or similar router with ADSL   DLINK DSL 320B.

In bridge mode, your router can then talk PPPoE to it.

I'd like to do bonding with ADSL/FTTC/FTTP   FireBrick 2700

Use alongside a DLINK modem if you have ADSL, or the ZyXEL 1312 if you have FTTC lines.

You can always use your own equipment, that's fine too!
