Load Thunderbird/Icedove, then go to:
Edit (or Tools) -> Account Settings -> Outgoing Server (SMTP) -> Edit -> Set "Connection security: STARTTLS"
Ensure that you '''don't''' have the connection security set to 'SSL/TLS
